How to play Chess
These rules describe the current implementation in Rrethi.
Standard play
Standard chess movement, castling, en passant and promotion apply.
Wins
Checkmate, resignation or time loss wins, except where no legal mating sequence is possible.
Draws
Stalemate and dead positions are draws.
Repetition
Threefold repetition and the 50-move rule require a claim; fivefold repetition and 75 moves apply automatically.
Connection
Disconnecting does not pause the clock.
First move
Each player has 30 seconds for the first move. Before both first moves, a game can be aborted without an Elo change.
Scoring and finish
How the winner is decided.
- New players start at 1200 in each pool.
- The first 10 rated games are provisional.
- Blitz and Rapid ratings are independent.
Starter strategy
Three practical ideas.
- Pick the time control that matches your calculation speed.
- In Blitz, check forcing threats before moving.
