Rules

How to play Tavull

These rules describe the current implementation in Rrethi.

01

Opening

Each player rolls one die. The higher roll starts and both opening values are used.

02

Dice

Normal turns use two dice; doubles provide four moves.

03

Maximum use

Use the maximum possible number of dice. If only one can be played, use the higher die.

04

Hits

A point with two or more opposing checkers is closed. A single opposing checker can be hit and sent to the bar.

05

The bar

A checker on the bar must re-enter before any other checker moves.

06

Bearing off

Bearing off begins only after all 15 checkers reach the home board.

Scoring and finish

How the winner is decided.

  • A normal win scores 1.
  • A win before the opponent bears off any checker scores 2.
  • The current match target is 5.

Starter strategy

Three practical ideas.

  • Build closed points to restrict entry and movement.
  • Avoid exposed single checkers without calculating the hit risk.
  • During bearing off, maximize legal use of both dice.
