Rules

How to play Murlan

These rules describe the current implementation in Rrethi.

01

Rank order

Cards rank from 3 through Ace, then 2, black joker and red joker.

02

Opening

Only the opening combination of the first hand must contain 3♠.

03

Combinations

Legal plays are singles, pairs, triples, four-of-a-kind and straights of 5–13 cards.

04

Straights

Straights use no jokers or repeated ranks. A-2-3-4-5 is legal; J-Q-K-A-2 is not. A normal straight is answered by an equal-length straight starting exactly one rank higher.

05

Power plays

A quad beats regular non-quad combinations. A same-suit straight beats quads and non-flush combinations.

06

Control

After every other active player passes, control resets to the last player who played.

Scoring and finish

How the winner is decided.

  • Finishing places score 3, 2, 1 and 0.
  • The target starts at 21 and can extend to 31, 41 or 51 if multiple sides cross together.
  • At the maximum target of 51, if two or more players or teams reach or exceed the target, the engine records the final result as match_tied even when their totals differ.
  • Classic means four players free-for-all, not single-player.

Starter strategy

Three practical ideas.

  • Save a power combination to regain control.
  • Avoid breaking a strong straight without checking your exit plan.
  • In 2v2, plan around your partner’s likely remaining cards.
